Tree Nut Allergy and Cashews: What You Should Know

Cashews are a tree nut
Cashews belong to the group of foods called tree nuts, alongside almonds, walnuts, pistachios, pecans and others. For most people they're a healthy snack. For people with a tree nut allergy, they can cause a serious reaction, so it's worth understanding the basics. This post is general information and not medical advice.
What an allergic reaction can look like
Symptoms usually start within minutes to a couple of hours after eating. They can include an itchy mouth or throat, hives or a rash, swelling of the lips, face or tongue, stomach pain, vomiting or diarrhoea. A severe reaction, called anaphylaxis, can cause difficulty breathing, dizziness or collapse and is a medical emergency. If you suspect a serious reaction, get emergency medical help straight away.
Cashew and pistachio often go together
Cashews and pistachios belong to the same plant family, as we describe in cashews are related to mangoes and pistachios. Doctors often note that an allergy to one can go together with an allergy to the other. Whether you should avoid other nuts is a decision for an allergy specialist, who can test you and advise.
If you or your child may be allergic
Don't test it yourself with a bite of a nut. See a doctor or an allergy specialist, who can arrange proper testing and give you a plan, including what to do in an emergency. Don't rely on a blog post or a shop for that advice.
Reading labels and cross-contact
People with nut allergies need to read labels carefully, because traces of nuts can end up in products made in shared kitchens or factories. Nuts can also be part of foods you might not expect, such as sauces, baked goods, sweets and nut pastes. When you're buying for someone else, for example a gift, check first whether they have any allergies.
Our products
Everything we sell contains cashews, a tree nut, and our gift boxes and hampers do too. Some flavours contain other ingredients as well, so read each product page, and ask us before you buy if you have a question. Because we handle cashews, we can't offer a nut-free environment. If you're gifting, a thank-you gift box is a good choice for someone you know enjoys nuts, and our gifting guide has more ideas.
