Missing Real Ceylon Cashews Abroad? Here's Why the Supermarket Bag Isn't It
That supermarket bag just isn't it
Most Sri Lankans who've moved abroad have had this exact moment: standing in a foreign supermarket aisle, missing kaju, and picking up a bag labelled "cashews" hoping it'll scratch the itch. It usually doesn't. The nuts are fine, technically, but they taste flat — not bad exactly, just missing whatever it was that made the ones back home worth remembering.
That's not homesickness talking. It's a real, explainable difference in how the nuts were grown, processed, and roasted — not a minor regional variation, but a different product wearing the same name.
What's actually different about Ceylon cashews
Most cashews sold internationally come from large processors in Vietnam, India, or West Africa, roasted in bulk months before they reach a shelf on the other side of the world. Volume and shelf life are the priority, not the roast on any individual batch — understandable at that scale, but it's exactly the kind of inconsistency that strips out the flavor people grew up with.
Sri Lankan cashews, and Ceylon cashews specifically, tend to come from smaller, more deliberate operations by comparison — closer to how we roast ours, in small batches, to order, from farms we know by name in Puttalam. We've written about why that matters for freshness in an earlier post, but the short version is: a cashew roasted last week tastes nothing like one roasted four months ago, no matter how good the bag looks.
Yes, we ship outside Sri Lanka
We don't have international shipping built into checkout yet — it's not a one-click order the way a local delivery is. What we do have is a direct line: message us on WhatsApp through our contact page, tell us your country and what you're after, and we'll work out shipping and cost with you directly.
It's a bit more manual than ordering from a big international retailer, but it means an actual person is sorting out your order, not an algorithm — and for a lot of our customers abroad, that's exactly who they'd rather be dealing with for something this specific.
A box worth sending home, too
This cuts both ways. As much as it's for Sri Lankans abroad missing the real thing, it's also for anyone back home who wants to send a proper gift box to family overseas instead of whatever's available at their end — birthdays, weddings, or just because, and if you build a custom hamper, you can add a note card at checkout.
